The best way for me to tell you how I start a massage.  I could say that I do different modalities I've gone to different workshop's but, the best way and only way to tell you what I do is:  When my hands touch your body, your body tells me where to start, and what technique I need to use, how deep or lite the pressure should be.  My clients all tell me that I have a gift.. i've been doing massages sense I was 9 yrs old.  I always worked on my Mothers feet an back. I'm 70 yrs.old now. I don't evaluate myself. I'm told by everybody, that my  hands are  like magic .   " I just love helping   people ".
